In Intentional Consequences, The Sentinel Observer is a fictitious news media company headquartered in Boston. Leonard Mayer is the publisher of the Sentinel Observer and the Sentinel Observer Media Group. The company publishes a print edition in Boston and syndicates many of its articles and Op/Eds nationally across a wide range of regional and local newspapers. It also has a popular smartphone app that has the fourth highest internet news subscriber base in the United States. Only the New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal are ahead.

David Bernbach, the activist investor, and Leonard Mayer have had various mutually-beneficial business and political relationships over time.

Valerie Williams, the professor wife of billionaire tech founder Rakesh Jain, occasionally publishes Op/Ed pieces in the Sentinel Observer.

Andy Baker is a reporter at the Sentinel Observer. A graduate of University of Texas at Austin, Andy worked at the Washington Post before joining the Sentinel Observer. Professor Williams was one of his professors when he was at UT-A.
